SKETCH: Abraham Nichols, 7th child & 4th son of the 1st Cal eb & Ann (Ward) Nichols of Stratford, CT, was born Jan. 19, 1662 at Stratford. He m/1 Rachel Kellogg (b. Feb. 1663, d au. of Daniel Kellogg, Sr. of Norwalk, Fairfield Co., CT) D ec. 3, 1684 at Stratford. Sometime after 1708 he m/2 Mrs. S arah Rogers Buckingham, dau. of Eleazer Rogers of Milford, and widow of Samuel Buckingham (Nov. 1, 1668-Oct. 29, 170 8). Caleb was one of the 3 sons that accompanied their fath er, Sgt. Francis Nicholls, of Sedgeberrow, Worcestershire, England, to the colonies, prob. c. 1634-5. Francis & son s were documented in Stratford, Fairfield, Ct in 1639 (on e of 17 original planters) where he was in charge of the tr ainband.
Abraham did not remove to Woodbury with his father, but rat her remained in Stratford to look after his father's planta tion (originally some 3,000 acres) and proprietary interest s which he inherited in large part.
Around the year 1700, he built an immense, rambling home (l ater called Nicholls' Farm Manor,) a 'lordly domain,' wit h gambrel roof located on high ground with 'an unobstructe d view of the surrounding landscape, and at the south west, about 4 miles distant, the shimmering bosom of Long Islan d Sound' (Nicholls, p.24). He lived out his years there and it was handed down to the family. The original homestea d was last occupied by his great grandson, Hezekiah, Nichol s, Esq. His heirs built their homes on portions of his lan d and that area became known as Nichols Village. Early in the 20th c the old home site was still in the Nichols family but the large, original home had been torn down.
His second wife had at least one son, Samuel Buckingham, Jr., by her first husband as land records reflect that land was conveyed by Abraham & Sarah Nichols to that aforemention ed son of Milford, June 24, 1735.
Caleb, Abraham's brother, was executor of his father, Caleb 's estate.
