He was 64. A native of Saginaw, he attended University of Detroit High School and took courses at a Wisconsin college and Highland Park Junior College while working at the Ford Motor Co. and selling real estate. He left the real estate business in 1928 to become a Detroit policeman. Five years later he became a detective, and in 1947 he was named an inspector and head of the holdup squad. Maher won 13 precinct citations and the commissioner's citation, the latter for his work in the Victor Reuther shooting case.
