    It is said that Martin, who ran a general store in Mount Pleasant commissioned a sign to be painted for his store and that the last name was misspelled "Prentiss" and that rather than change the sign, he changed his name.

    Martin is not shown with a general store until the 1900 census, prior to that his occupation is always listed as Shoe and Boot maker. I every census prior to 1900 his name is shown as Prentiss, so the family story may or may not be true.

    Note:
    The Hawkins came from RI, Abraham being the earliest we know of. He fought in the Revolutionary War and settled in Wallingford, VT. He had two wives and 16 children. George Washington Hawkins was his first born (in NH) and had two wives as well with 21 children. He lived near Plattsburgh NY and in the 1840's moved his family to Lake County IL (his last child was born in IL). Tertius would seem to be the third child but was the fourth by the second wife, Isabelle Stetson. She was descended from Cornet Robert Stetson who was prominent in King Phillip's War in the 1690's in MA. The hatmaker branches off very early winding up in Philadelphia.

    Stephen Sherwood had a mine in Trinity County, CA He was one of the original settlers of White Rock, a ghost town now. He was there from about 1880-1894. He is buried there with his youngest son Wills. Another son, Orin, also died in that area (Weaverville).I believe Stephen went down to San Francisco several times for different reasons. In fact he may have spent some Winters there (possibly with Carrie and her family)."
