    Mrs. Louis J. Wilburn
    Mrs. Virginia Louise Neikirk Wilburn, age 80, of 420 Allison Ave. S.W., passed away in a local hospital Tuesday night. She was a former employee of The Book Nook and was the widow of Louis J. Wilburn, a former Civil Service government worker. Surviving are her son, Raymond N. Wilburn of White Plains, N.Y.; her daughter, Mrs. Samuel B. Bird Jr. of Pelham, NY; her sister, Mrs. H. C. Burgard of Street, Maryland; four grandchildren: Christopher, James and Molly Wilburn of New York, Miss Elizabeth R. Bird of Pelham, N.Y., and one great grandchild, Christopher Wilburn, Jr. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Roanoke chapel at 10 a.m. Friday by Dr. Edgar A. Potts and Rev. Samuel B. Bird, Jr. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Roundhill Cemetery in Marion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be mad to The Roanoke Valley Heart Association.

    Naturalization:
    In May of 1917 William completes and signs a Declaration of Intention to become a citizen of the United States. He declares he was born in Milltown, New Brunswick and currently is an auto repairman living in Waltham, Mass.. He renounces forever his allegiance to King George V and states he is not an anarchist or polygamist and intends to become a citizen of the United States.
    Note: The following month William completes a WWI draft registration and states he was born in Calais, ME.

    Military Note:
    On June 4, 1917, William completed a WWI Registration card, on it he states he lives at 27 Vernon Street in Waltham, Mass, he is 23 years of age, born May 15, 1894. He is natural born in Calais, Maine. He occupation is as an auto machinist for the Mac Gregor Garage in Waltham, Mass., is single and caucasian. The registrar reports he is of medium height and medium build with brown eyes and brown hair, he is not bald. There is a handwritten note above the signature of William that states, "I have passed Naval Reserve examination."
    Note: Two brothers of William register the following day, they give the same home address as William although they each say they are aliens (not citizens), born in Milltown, New Brunswick, Canada and therefore citizens of Great Britain. Family lore says that William was also born in Milltown but lied in order to join the service. Milltown and Calais, Maine are directly opposite each other on the US/Canada border. William did serve in the Army Air Force during World War I. Also, Williams eyes were blue, not brown.

    April 5, 1919 - April 21, 1919 aboard the S.S. Brazos. Peg is shown on ship manifests as traveling from the port of New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The family story is that her father sent her on a trip to get over a break-up with her boyfriend, Skin Gadine.

    Given that Peg and Mac marry in January of 1920 it seems as if they had a whirlwind romance!

    A pretty wedding occurred Saturday morning at 9 o'clock when Miss Margaret Maher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gervus Maher, became the bride of William James McGoldrick, son of Mr. James McGoldrick, of Waltham, Mass. Mgr. Dempsey performed the ceremony, which was followed by a wedding breakfast at the Hotel Statler for the immediate families. The bride wore an attractive gown of blue tricotine embroidered in gold and Nile green, with a green hat and a corsage boquet of orchids and valley lilies. Mr. and Mrs. McGoldrick left for a western trip. The bride's grandmother, Mrs. John Maher, of Saginaw, was present at the wedding.

    Miss Margaret Maher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gervis Maher and Mr. William James McGoldrick, son of Mr. and Mrs. James McGoldrick, were married Saturday at 9 o'clock by Monsignor M. Dempsey. The ceremony was a quiet one, witnessed by the members of the immediate families only. The bride was most attractive in a frock of midnight blue tricolette, embroidered in nile green, with a Batavia cloth hat of nile green. Miss Maher and Mr. McGoldrick were unattended. They went on a wedding trip.

    An interesting wedding was that of Miss Margaret Maher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gurvus Maher, and William J. McGolderick, which was solemnized at 9 o'clock, Saturday morning in SS. Peter and Paul's cathedral church. Mgr. M. Dempsey officiating. It was a quiet simple ceremony, only the immediate families being present. The bride was very charming in her traveling gown of midnight blue tricotine trimmed in green and embroidered in gold and black. She wore a small hat of green batavia cloth and a corsage of orchids and sweetheart roses. Miss Maher and Mr. McGoldrick were unattended. A breakfast in the Hotel Statler for just the families, followed the church ceremony, after which the bridal couple left on a western trip. They will be at home to their friends upon their return at 188 Tennyson ave. The only out-of-town guest at the wedding was Mrs. John Maher, of Saginaw, the bride's grandmother.
