LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THOMAS COLE

I, Thomas Cole of Gravity, Iowa, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, but knowing that life is uncertain, do hereby make, publish and declare this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills, by me at any time here-to-fore made.
Paragraph One: I first will and direct that all my just and lawful debts, including funeral charges and expenses of my last sickness, be paid in full.
Paragraph Two: After payment of above I will, devise and bequeath to my beloved wife, Lydia Cole, a life estate in all my property, both real and personal, with authority to manage, control and collect the rent and profits derived from the same during her natural life, but with no authority to sell the same or any portion thereof. This bequest to my said wife being in lieu of all dower rights given her by law.
Paragraph Three: After the death of my said wife, I will devise and bequeath all my property, both real and personal, that I may own or have an interest in as follows:
(a) Whereas, I have assisted and helped my two sons, T.M. Cole and Bert B. Cole, in sums greater in amount than their portions would be should I give them each an equal share in my estate with the rest of my children, I therefore will and direct that neither said T.M. Cole nor Bert B. Cole have or derive any interest whatever in my said estate; it being my intention that neither one of them shall participate in said estate, and they are not willed anything.
(b) And whereas, I have assisted and helped my daughter Ellen L. Laws, it is also my will, and I so direct that she be barred from participating in my said estate, and she is not willed anything, and she is to have no interest whatever therein.
(c) And whereas, I have helped and assisted my son, John E. Cole, in sums of money and other acts of assistance aggregating about twenty-four hundred dollars, it is my will, and I so direct, that my said son, John E. Cole, be given, devised and bequeathed an undivided one-sixth of my estate, less said twenty-four hundred dollars.
(d) It is my will and I so devise, bequeath and direct, that all the balance of my estate, after making the distributions as directed above, be equally divided between my children, Arvilla Crawford, Mattie M. Robinson, Anna Neff, Allen R. Cole, and Ada Brillhart, share and share alike, it being my intention that my last five named children shall share equally in the balance of my estate after making the distributions as directed above.
Paragraph Four: It is my will and I hereby appoint my son-in-law, Elmer Crawford, executor of this my last will and testament.

Thos. Cole Passes Away
Thomas Cole passed away at his home here Monday evening about six o'clock after a brief illness. While not in the best of health for some time before his death, he was able to be about most of the time.

The funeral service will likely not be held until late in the week as a son, John Cole of Loma, Montana, is coming and the body will be held until he arrives.

Gravity Independent

Thomas Cole has lived in this section of Taylor County more than a half century. He is survived by his companion and a large family of children, all with homes of their own. Before moving to Gravity he lived on a farm northwest of town. He was 78 years, 11 months and 20 days old at the time of his death. The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved family.

Miner, Edward Otis, Merrill Otis, Hileman Otis, and Hannah and Sarah Otis, united. The first three of these were from Connecticut, the remainder from Ohio. It was not until two years afterward that preaching was secured. During this time, Elders Otis, Jonathan Miner and others officiated. During the Summer of 1845, Elder

At Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting, held at Bush Creek, 20 of 4 mo. 1793, Joseph Talbott requested a certificate for himself, Mary his wife and their children, viz. Sarah, Elizabeth, Allen, and William to Westland Monthly Meeting." "At Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting held 18 of 5 mo. 1793, the Friends appointed produced a certificate for Joseph Talbott and family which was read, approved, and put in to the hands of Joseph Talbott to forward.

Their grandson, Dr. Thomas M. Talbott (Robt.) of Washington, D.C., says that after leaving their home at New Market, Frederick Co., they moved to Sewickly, near Pittsburg, Pa., where his father was born in 1797; that his grandfather, "Joseph bought land in Jefferson co., Ohio, eleven miles from Steubenville, where he laid out a town and called it Richmond, after Richmond, Va."; that "There is now a large number of his descendants in Jefferson Co., and he is buried in the Quaker burying ground near Richmond"; that he remembers having read in a history of Jefferson co., Ohio, that his grandfather paid $2.50 an acre for the farm. Joseph Talbott died there 17 Nov. 1852. His widow (her grandneice, Mrs. Mary S. Plummer says) "was 102 years and a few months old when she died.

Note:
Joseph Talbott in the year 1799 bought of Bezaleel Wells the northeast quarter of Section 10, for which he paid $2.50 an acre. He settled there the next year and in 1815 employed Isaac Jenkinson to lay out a town with streets sixty feet wide and lots 60 x 160 feet.. The work was conpleted on September 20 and the new town named Richmond. B. Hartman built the first dwelling, a log house 18 x 28 feet, who also kept a hotel and followed blacksmithing. His house was located on the corner of Sugar and Main Streets. Allen Farquhar was the first storekeeper, and by 1817 there were five families in the town, those of William Talbot, Benjamin Hartman, William McCarrell, William Bahan and Anderson Judkins, the latter being the first physician. Will:
I, Joseph Talbott, of Salem Township, Jefferson County and State of Ohio do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say;

First: It is my will that my Funeral expenses and all my just debts be fully paid

Second: I give, device and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Talbott all and every part of my Estate both real and personal during her natural life. She however first disposing of a Sufficient thereto to pay my just debts as aforesaid. And at the death of my said wife, all the property hereby devised or bequeathed to her as aforesaid or so much as may remain unexpired, to my beloved son Kinsey M. Talbott, and to his heirs and assigns forever.

Third: I give and bequeath to my beloved son Allen Talbott one dollar together with all monies, goods and chattel hereto given him, and now in his possession and to his heirs and assigns forever.

Fourth: I give and bequeath to my beloved son William Talbott one dollar together with all monies , goods and chattels, hereto given him and now in his possession and to his heirs and ass gins forever.

Fifth: I give and bequeath to my beloved son John Talbott, one dollar together with all monies goods and chattels hereto given him and now in his possession and to his heirs and assigns forever.

Sixth: I give and bequeath to my beloved Son Robert Talbott one dollar together with all monies goods and chattels heretofore given him and now in his possession and to his heirs and assigns forever.

Seventh: I give and bequeath to my beloved Daughter Mary Parsons, one dollar together with all monies goods chattels hereto given her and now in her possession and her heirs and assigns forever

Eight: I give and bequeath to my beloved Daughter Hannah Hammond one dollar together with all monies goods and chattels hereto give her and now in her possession and to her heirs and assigns forever

Ninth: I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Joseph Talbott one dollar together with all monies, goods and chattels hereto given him and now in his possession and to his heirs and assigns forever.

Tenth; I give and bequeath to my beloved son Thomas Talbott, one dollar together with all monies goods and chattels thereto given him and now in his possession to his heirs and assigns forever

Eleventh: I give and bequeath to the children of my dearest daughter Sara Cole, one daughter together with all monies goods and chattels hereto given her to her heirs and assigns forever (Wife of Joshua Cole)


Twelfth: I give and bequeath to the children of my deceased daughter
Elizabeth French, one dollar together with all the monies goods chattels
hereto given her to them her heirs and assign forever

And Lastly I nominate and appoint my beloved son Kinsey M. Talbott Executor of this my last will and testament hereby making all former wills by me made.

Joseph married Mary FARQUHAR on 14 Nov 1786 in Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting, Frederick Co., MD. Mary (daughter of Allen FARQUHAR and Sarah Jane MOORE) was born on 6 Jan 1769 in 1769, 11m, 6d, Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting, Frederick Co., MD; died on 5 Sep 1872 in Richmond, Jefferson, OH; was buried in Quaker Cemetery, Richmond, Jefferson, OH. At Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting, held at Bush Creek, 20 of 4 mo. 1793, Joseph Talbott requested a certificate for himself, Mary his wife and their children, viz. Sarah, Elizabeth, Allen, and William to Westland Monthly Meeting." "At Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting held 18 of 5 mo. 1793, the Friends appointed produced a certificate for Joseph Talbott and family which was read, approved, and put in to the hands of Joseph Talbott to forward.

Their grandson, Dr. Thomas M. Talbott (Robt.) of Washington, D.C., says that after leaving their home at New Market, Frederick Co., they moved to Sewickly, near Pittsburg, Pa., where his father was born in 1797; that his grandfather, "Joseph bought land in Jefferson co., Ohio, eleven miles from Steubenville, where he laid out a town and called it Richmond, after Richmond, Va."; that "There is now a large number of his descendants in Jefferson Co., and he is buried in the Quaker burying ground near Richmond"; that he remembers having read in a history of Jefferson co., Ohio, that his grandfather paid $2.50 an acre for the farm. Joseph Talbott died there 17 Nov. 1852. His widow (her grandneice, Mrs. Mary S. Plummer says) "was 102 years and a few months old when she died.

At Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting held 14 of 9 mo. 1786, Joseph Talbott and Mary Farquhar appeared here and declared their Intentions of marriage with each other, the young mans father gave his consent in writing to this meeting. The other parents being present now expressed theirs." "At Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting held 18 of 11 mo. 1786, The Friends appointed to attend the marriage of Joseph Talbott and Mary Farquhar report that they thought it was orderly accomplished and returned the certificate.

His parents are unknown, although several have suggested Alexander Argo as the father.

William began his ministry in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1784 at the age of 21 years. In 1788 he married Nancy Savage near Milford, Delaware, and immediately commenced the life of a circuit rider.
