A Thomas Cole died in Jefferson County, Ohio in 1808, and his will stated that he was a son of Christopher. The Jefferson County Historical Association assembled a "Cole Family Document" that lists these four Coles (Christopher Jr., Ezekiel, Samuel and Thomas) and six other additional Coles (Mordecai, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, John and William) as children of Christopher and Sarah Cole. The marital status of Thomas is unclear. A document reported to be in the Maryland Historical Society states Thomas married (1) Mary Richardson, who died 3/9/1718 and (2) Sarah ?. It is not known whether there is any proof of a first marriage for Thomas. The book 'Baltimore County Families, 1659 - 1759.' does not list two marriages; however it does list a Thomas Cole (no known relation to John Cole) who married Mary ? and had Richardson's as in-laws. This Thomas , however, died by 1745. IF there is a first marriage for Thomas, is is possible that his first two children, Christopher and Thomas, were children of the first marriage. This is pure speculation, and there is nothing in public records to support it. In 1725, Thomas surveyed 100 acres of 'Christopher's Lot; between 1/9/1718 and 3/6/1733/4, he obtained portions of 'Levy'sTribe', addition to 'Bevy's Tribe', and 'Green's Chance'; in1750, he owned 100 acres of 'Christophers Lot' and 50 acres of 'Thomas' Lot'; in March 1768, he sold these two tracts to his son, Thomas, Jr.; in 1781, he conveyed to his son Christopher, tracts of 'Christophers Lot' and the lease of 'Mountain.' Thomas was mentioned in the will of John Broad, who died about 1709. John Broad was the second husband of Barbara (Stone) Garrett, Thomas' maternal grandmother.

Several genealogist have assigned ancestors to John Cole, but none has produced proof of his ancestry.'The Parrish Family,' ( p. 336) lists a William Cole and his wife Sarah as possible parents of John with the caution that the relationship has not been proved.'The Early Settlers of Maryland'( p. 98) lists a William Cole and his wife Sarah as immigrants to Maryland in 1650-51. 'Descendants From First Families...' gives, without proof, the following ancestry for John Cole: John Cole (above), s/o Thomas Cole who owned a plantation called Coale's Harbour, which today is known as Baltimore Harbour; s/o William Coale; s/o WilliamCoale by his 2nd wife Hannah. This last William married 3 times and resided in what is now Anne Arundel Co., MD. 'Genealogies of Virginia Families' presents evidence that a Sarah Cole was the sole heir of Thomas Cole who patented Coale's Harbor and therefore Thomas Coale is not the father of John. John Cole testified at the trial of Captain John Oldten who was tried and convicted and later given a royal pardon in the murder of Dennis Garrett, his father-in-law.

There are several versions of the family of John and Johanna (Garrett) Cole. The main difference beteen the two concerns Christopher Cole, one of the principals of the subject Cole line. The book, "The Parrish Family" lists Christopher as the son of John and Johanna Cole and the book, "Baltimore County Families" lists Christopher as the grandson of John and Johanna. The latter version is more consistent with the dates associated with Christopher's life and is used in this document.

Mary Chilcoat has not been identified with certainty, but the person who would seem to be the most likely candidate to this compiler (Charles Tipton) is the widow of Humphrey Chilcoat. Humphrey and Mary Chilcoat, as recorded in St. James Parish, had four children James, John, John and Mary. Humphrey Chilcoat died in January of 1708, two months prior to the birth of his last child. Three factors influence the selection of this Mary Chilcoat as the wife of Jonathon Tipton: 1) She was a widow and thus eligible, 2) Jonathon sold James Chilcoat a small plot (30 acres) close to his homestead, out of the Addition to Poor Jamaica Man's Plague, in 1733, and 3) neither Mary Chilcoat nor her sons appear subsequently in the St. James Parish records.
