Note: The marital status of Thomas is unclear. A document reported to be in the Maryland Historical Society states Thomas married (1) Mary Richardson, who died 3/9/1718 and (2) Sarah ?. It is not known whether there is any proof of a first marriage for Thomas. The book 'Baltimore County Families, 1659 - 1759.' does not list two marriages; however it does list a Thomas Cole (no known relation to John Cole) who married Mary ? and had Richardson's as in-laws. This Thomas , however, died by 1745. IF there is a first marriage for Thomas, is is possible that his first two children, Christopher and Thomas, were children of the first marriage. This is pure speculation, and there is nothing in public records to support it. In 1725, Thomas surveyed 100 acres of 'Christopher's Lot; between 1/9/1718 and 3/6/1733/4, he obtained portions of 'Levy'sTribe', addition to 'Bevy's Tribe', and 'Green's Chance'; in1750, he owned 100 acres of 'Christophers Lot' and 50 acres of 'Thomas' Lot'; in March 1768, he sold these two tracts to his son, Thomas, Jr.; in 1781, he conveyed to his son Christopher, tracts of 'Christophers Lot' and the lease of 'Mountain.' Thomas was mentioned in the will of John Broad, who died about 1709. John Broad was the second husband of Barbara (Stone) Garrett, Thomas' maternal grandmother.

Note: The "Baltimore County Families " book lists Christopher Jr. and Ezekiel as children of Christopher and Sarah. The 1790 census for Maryland lists a Samuel Cole as a son of Christopher. A Thomas Cole died in Jefferson County, Ohio in 1808, and his will stated that he was a son of Christopher. The Jefferson County Historical Association assembled a "Cole Family Document" that lists these four Coles (Christopher Jr., Ezekiel, Samuel and Thomas) and six other additional Coles (Mordecai, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, John and William) as children of Christopher and Sarah Cole. There were two other Coles who were in Jefferson County in the early 1800's who could have been sons of Christopher and Sarah: Mordecai Cole , who died in Jefferson County in 1813 and William Cole who married Anna Talbot. DNA: MKM Note: Christopher possibly married Sarah Hooker second. In January 1737, Christopher bought 100 acres of Panthers Hills from John Parrish and still owned the land in 1750. In 1781 his father, Thomas Sr., conveyed to him, 'Christophers Lot' and the lease of 'Mountain.'

DNA: MKM Residence: Ezekiel moved from Maryland to Jefferson County and was one of the first permanent settlers of Salem Township along with James Moores, Edward Devine, Joseph Hall, Stephen Ford, Joseph Hobson, Joseph Talbott, William Farquehar, William Bailey and James Bailey. Note: Ezekiel filed for a Revolutionary War Pension but his application was denied because service in Rev. War was less than 6 months. Ezekiel married Sarah ROWLAND about 1772 in MD. Sarah (daughter of Thomas ROWLAND) was born in Baltimore Co., MD; was buried in Quaker Cemetery, Richmond, Jefferson, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
DNA: MKM Note: A local newspaper in Jefferson County reported that Samuel Cole found a stray mare. Note: Samuel applied for a Revolutinary War pension, but the application was rejected because he served less than six months. In a deposition in his Pension Application file R2142, Samuel stated "he was born in North Hundred, Baltimore County, in the State of Maryland, on the 20th day of September 1762" and the only person who could testify to his military service was his brother, Ezekiel Cole. That statement definitely links Samuel to Ezekiel and verifies that Samuel, too, was a son of Christopher. There is a Power of Attorney form in the file that was executed by Thomas Cole, son of Samuel, on 11/21/1853. The form states Samuel died on February 13, 1842 in Harrison County, Ohio and he left surviving, "Thomas; Elijah; Meshac; Charly; Betsy Wright, a widow; Julianne Cole; the living children of Teresa, deceased, intermarried with Luke Tipton; Sarah, intermarried with John Barrett; and Sarah, his widow, died in the month of March 1842." Note: The information available on Thomas and Martha in Jefferson County is both meager and inconsistent. Data from Martha'a gravestone note that she died in 1858, age 65, which places her birth date about 1793. However, that birth date is not consistent with the birth date of son, Ezekiel, on 2/1/1805. There was a Thomas Cole listed in the Census Records for Jefferson County, Salem Township as age 70 in 1850, and there was no Martha listed. The Thomas listed in the 1850 Census was undoubtedly the sonof Ezekiel and Sarah. Data from Thomas' tombstone note that he died in 1857, age 83, which would place his date of birth about 1774. Thomas and Martha were buried in the Richmond Quaker Cemetery, Salem Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. Buried: Find A Grave e-Memorial

This census does not seem to account for either Sarah or Hannah, otherwise it fits perfectly. DNA: MKM Obituary: Thomas Cole was born in Gravity, Taylor county, Iowa, on Oct. 9, 1875, where he spent his early life and engaged in farming. He was married there in 1899. The family came to Montana in 1912 and took up a homestead and resided there until 1939, when they left for San Diego, California. His wife preceded him in death. About eight years ago he went to Seattle. He was united in marriage there and in 1949 and his wife survives. Surviving are two daughters, Myrl Watson and Evelyn Kaldor; three brothers and three sisters, and other relatives. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery. Note: This obituary is pretty confusing about marriages. Thomas did marry in 1899 in Iowa and he and Hattie did come to Montana. Hattie died in 1920 so when the obituary says "they" left for San Diego in 1939 it is unclear who "they" are. Thomas is enumerated in the 1940 census living with his daughter Merl, his marital status is married but no wife is listed. The obituary continues saying he went to Seattle and was married there and in 1949. As near as I can figure, it appears he was married four times. The only other marriage I find besides Hattie is to a Cora Wilson Halfacre in Montana in 1936. Census: 1900 census at Washington Township, Taylor, IA lists: || Thomas Cole, born Oct 1875, age 24, born Iowa, parents born OH/Canada, married 1 year; Hattie, born Oct 1879, age 20, born Iowa, parents born unknown/unknown, children born and living, 0. Note: John and Daisy were married in Bedford, Iowa in 1908, their daughter Phyllis was born in 1909. They are present together in the 1910 census. John is found in the 1920 census living in Montana with his second wife Katie Maud Ryker and their son Homer who was born in February of 1917. Daisy is found in the 1925 state census living with her sister Lois. With her are her daughter's Phyllis and June. June was born in June of 1918. In this census and all subsequent census she gives her marital status as widow. John's second wife Katie Ryker Cole marries for a second time in Iowa. In 1923, at the age of 45 she marries a 69 year old man. Thus it would appear that John and Daisy were divorced early in their marriage, Daisy never remarries but has a child in 1918. John remarries Katie, she had a child in 1917. John and Katie appear to divorce by 1923 when Katie marries a second time. DNA: MKM Census: 1910 census at Grant Township, Taylor, IA shows: John C.
