'The History and Antiquities of the Name and Family of Kilbourne,'by Payne Kenyon Kilbourne: Thomas Kilbourne, the common ancestor of all the Kilborne's (now spelled variously - Kilborn, Kilburn, Kilbourn, Kilbourne, etc,) on the Western Continent (USA) was born in the parish of Wood Ditton, in the County of Cambridge, England, 1578, where he was baptized on the 8th of May of that year. The next mention found of him, is contained in the will of Agatha Borrowdale, who, in 1613, bequeathed to him and others, certain property in trust for benevolent purposes; for the care of which he was to receive,at the end of every seven years, 'a ring of gold of the price of 30s. ' Unlike most of the pioneers of New England, he was a member of the Church of England, as appears from the fact that he was a Church Warden of his native parish in 1632. He married Frances (?) and had eight children (10- sic) viz, Targaret, Thomas, Elizabeth, George, Mary Lydia, Frances, and John. On the 15th of April, 1635, Thomas Kilborne, with a portion of his family, embarked from London for New England, in the ship 'Increase,' Robert Lea, master, as appears by the following paragraphs from the Massachusetts Historical Society, 3rd series, Vol VIII, p. 243, viz: '15th April 1635. These parties hereafter expressed are to be transported to New England, embarqued in the Increase, Robert Lea, Master, having taken the oath of allegiance and supremacy, as also being conformable to the orders and discipline of the church, whereof they brought testimony per certificates from the Justices and Ministers where their abodes have lately been. Husbandman, Tho. Kilborne (aged 55), his wife Frances Kilborne (aged 50), children Margaret Kilborne (aged 23), Lydia Kilborne(aged 22), Marie Kilborne (aged 16), Francis Kilborne (aged 12), John Kilborne (aged 10).' The family settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut, where Thomas Kilborne,Snr. died previous to 1639, at which date lands were recorded to 'Frances Kilborne, widow.' Mrs. Frances Kilborne died in 1650.

From the book by Payne Kenyon Kilbourne: 'The family settled in Wethersfield, on the west side of the Connecticut River, six miles below the present city of Hartford, where the subject of this notice spent the remainder of his days, and where he was long a useful and prominent citizen. On the 24th of September, 1647, at the ageof 23 years, his name occurs for the first time upon the Wethersfield records - he having been appointed Collector of the Tax Rates at that date. His first record as a land-holder bears date May 20, 1649. On the 8th of March, 1654, Mr. Kilbourn was appointed a member of the committee to run the boundary line between Wethersfield and Mattabossett,or Middletown, and three years subsequently he was chosen a member of a new committee for the same work. On the 2nd of April, 1655, John Kilbourn and Thomas Wright were appointed 'to run ye line betwixt Hartford and Wethersfield upon ye second day of next week.'' In may, 1657, he was confirmed by the General Court 'to be Sergeant at Wethersfield,' and from that time forward he is almost uniformly designated upon the Town Records as 'Sergeant Kilbourn.' At the October Session of the General Court, 1660, Sergeant Kilbourn took his seat in that body, for the first time, as a Repesentative from Wethersfield. He was a member at seven staed and special session, during a most interesting period of our colonial history. In May, 1661, Sergeant Kilbourn being in attendance, an address to the King was presented to the Court for consideration by a committee previously appointed for that purpose. It was approved; and a committee was appointed to draw up aPetition to His Majesty, and to 'compile and methodize the address as they shall judge most convenient, provided ye substance be still attendedand retained.' The petition and address were perfected; Governor Winthrop was appointed the Agent Colony to present them to the King - and 500 pounds were set apart for the furtehrance of the great object contemplated. These measues resulted in procuring the famous Charter of 1662 - by far the most liberal and republican instrument of civil government that the world at that date had ever seen. Under its benign auspices, the people of Connecticut continued to live and flourish until the adoption of our present State Constitution in 1818 - a period of 156 years. Sergeant Kilbourn was a member of the Legislature during nearly every regular and special session, from the date of the first propositionfor the Address and Petition, to the time when the Charter arrived in theColony - September, 1662; and it is fair to presume that he was a deeply interested participant in those important measures that resulted in the comparative freedom of the colony in which he had laid foundations of a Home for himself. At the May Session of the General Court, 1662, Sergeant Kilbourn was appointed by that body a member of the Colonial Grand Jury - an office which he continued to hold until the organization of the counties, in May, 1666. He was subsequently often a Grand Juror of Hartford County; also of Particular Courts, and Courts of Magistrates. In May, 1677, he was on the 'Jury of Life and Death' at Hartford. In town affairs, our ancestor was conspicuous for a period of nearly 40 years. Besides being a Collector, Lister and Constable, he was a Selectman for eleven years between 1657 and 1681, inclusive. During this period, a by-law was in force, providing that no person should be elected to the latter office for more than two years in succession. He also served on many important committees. In October, 1675, in the midst of the general war with King Philip, John Kilbourne petitioned the Council of War to be released from the office of Sergeant, which he had held for 18 eyars; and it was ordered that when Major Talcott should procure a suitable person in his place, he should be released.

The following paragraph from the hon. R.R. Hinman's "War of the Revolution," shows the nature of the charges preferred against him, and at the same time exhibits the novel cas of a "King's Attorney" informing against and prosecuting a subject for adhering to the king's cause.
"Hon. Andrew Adams, attorney of the king for Litchfield County, informed that Benjamin Kilbourn, who was Lieutenant in the 1st Military Company in Litchfield, had at sundry times declared that he wished there were ten hundred thousand regular troops then landed in the Colony, and that he would join then to subdue the Americans who were in a state of rebellion; that the commanding officer who fired upon the town of Falmouth, treated the inhabitants too mildly and gently, much more so than he would have done if he had had the command; that he would join the regulars, and would kill some of the inhabitants, etc. etc. The Legislature cashiered the said Benjamin for his offences, and an order was given to fill the vacancy in said company. And said Attorney was ordered by said Assembly to prosecute the said Benjamin for his offences." (Proceedings of General Assembly, Special Session, Dec., 1775.
He continued to reside in Litchfield until some years after the close of the war, when he removed with most of his family to Elizabethtown, near Brockville, Upper Canada - being determined, as he said, to "lay his bones on King George's soil." As he was making preparations to remove, a neighbor expressed surprise that, at his age, and after the cause of differences between him and some of his fellow townsmen had been removed, he should resolve upon emigrating to so distant a section of the country; to which he responded with characteristic zeal and earnestness - "Blood! Col. B., I want to breathe some of King George's air before I die!"

"In the early part of the war of the Revolution he was drafted into the service of the Americans - much against his own predilections. He, however, served through one campaign, and was engaged in several skirmishes with the British. In common with his father and most of his brothers, he was from the first a zealous and sincere loyalist in principle. When, therefore, he learned that he must run his chance of being drafted a second time, he resolved by some means to place himself beyond the reach of such a contingency. It so happened that about this time a loyal neighbor of his, Daniel Griswold, who had been a soldier in the British army, returned to his native town, bearing a Captains commission, and forthwith commenced the work of his mission, viz., enlisting soldiers into the king's service. Charles Kilborn was among the first to enroll his name, April 26, 1777. Dr. Reuben Smith, in a letter to Gov. Wolcott, dated at Litchfield, may 12, 1777, (in alluding to Griswold and his soldiers,) says: "The Wednesday following, April 30, they were taken, (except Benjamin Doolittle and Charles Kilborn, who is is said were killed in attempting to escape,) and were carried to Derby, where they were tried by a court marial, and Griswold was sentenced to be hanged; which sentence was executed the Monday following at New Haven. The rest were pardoned, upon their enlisting into the Continental army during the war." The supposition that Kilborn was killed, was a mistake. He was successful in his "attempt to escape." and, after a series of vicissitudes and adventures, he succeeded in finding his way to Canada, on foot - much of his route lying through uninhabited country. He stopped at
St. John's, then a considerable military post, where he en-
gaged himself as a clerk to an eminent merchant, named
White — he being then in the nineteenth year of his age. He
soon after became a partner with Mr. White ; and, though
extensively engaged in merchandizing, he was soon also an
active participant in the military movements consequent upon
the war. Before peace was concluded, he had attained the
rank of Captain in the British service. In Feb. 17S4, he
was married to Miss Margaret Young, a member of a loyal
family who had emigrated to Canada from the State of New
York. He subsequently removed to Caldwell's Manor, on
Lake Champlain, where for nearly seventeen years he was
extensively engaged as an agriculturist and merchant. Dur-
ing his residence here, he was for a long time the highest
civil and military officer in the place. Removing thence,
he resided for two years in Alburg. In 1804, he settled in
Stanstead, on an island formed by a considerable river, about
six miles west of Lake Memphremagog.

Wilkinson, in consequence of which his entire estate in Canada was confiscated to the British government. He soon after removed to Scriba, near Oswego, NY, where he continued to reside until his death in1847. I have a rather extensive bibiographic sketch written by John Kilborn -par of History of Leeds and Grenville, edited by Thad Leavitt, and published in Belleville, Ontario in 1972. Much of his comments deal with his experience as a British soldier in the War of 1812, and he mentions that he served in the Parliament of Upper Canada in 1828. I intend to type it into this section at some point. He and Elizabeth were married by the Rev. Richard Smart, minister of thePresbyterian Church in Elizabethtown, and they made their home in Unionville, Bastard Township, Leeds County. Ashiel Sherwood and Roderick Easton (who married Elizabeth's sisters Mary and Candace) were witnesses at the wedding. I also have a copy of an article from the Brockville Recorder, detailing a dinner held in Newboro on March 12, 1852. The occasion was in honor ofJohn Kilborn, on the occasion of his leaving Newboro to become postmaster in Brockville. Benjamin Tett headed the list of signatories on a petition n his honor. The dinner was apparently held in an inn run by Mr. and Mrs. William Hutchings Tett. Mrs. Tett was the former Jane Poole, Mary Ann Poole Chaffey's sister. After his service in Brockville, the Kilborns returned to Newboro, where they lived out their last few years. Also, I have a copy of a Queen's University Master's Thesis which focuses on the Tett family enterprises in the Rideau area, and mentions John Kilborn a number of times - obviously he and Tett cooperated on a number of projects. The thesis mentions Kilborn's ownership of the Mississauga Mills, an extensive sawmill operation, later sold to John Chaffey of Brockville (his son-in-law's cousin).

Kilborn's autobiography states that Roderick settled in Australia The following is taken from 'The Cyclopedia of Victoria,' p. 14 -downloaded from information supplied by Marg Richards, a descendent ofhis: 'Roderick Kilborn, Goojumg Vinehard, Wahgunyah, five miles fromRutherglen, was born in Canada, on teh river St.Lawrence, in the year1829, and is the third son of the late Mr. John Kilborn, who saw activeservice in the American War of 1814. He was educated in Canada, and cameout to Victoria in 1852 in the ship 'William Fotheringham.' On arrival,he went to the Forest Creek diggins, and subsequently visited all thegoldfields of Australia. After being engaged in various occupations, suchas carrier, coach-driver,etc., he joined the Telegraph Department of theGovernment Service, from which he retired in 1890, after completingthirty-one years of service. His present property was taken up in 1860,and Mr. Kilborn was one of the first to plant vines in the district. Itcomprises forty acres, of which thirty are under vines, and ten underorchard cultivation. Mr. Kilborn, who is highly esteemed throughout thedistrict, married, in 1864, a daughter of the late Mr. John Foord, an oldand respected pioneer of Victoria, and has a family of four sones and twodaughters. Lydia L. Cole was born near Quebec, Canada, August 22, 1847, and died October 4, 1923 aged, 76 years, 1 month and 12 days.
When 18 years of age she came with relatives to Illinois and settled near Kewanee, where she was married to Thomas Cole, July 3, 1867.
They came to Iowa in 1871 and settled on a farm east of Gravity where they resided until they moved to town. Her husband departed this life, Dec. 12, 1921.
To this union twelve children were born. Three died in infancy. Those remaining are: Mrs. Ellen Laws of Aurora, Nebraska; Mrs. Arvilla Crawford of Gravity, Iowa; Mrs. Nettie Robinson, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Mrs. Anna Neff of Hollywood, California; Mrs. Ada Brillhart of Hollywood, California; Thomas Cole of Havelock, Nebraska; John Cole of Loma, Montana; Allen R. Cole of Gravity, Iowa; and Bert Cole of Los Angeles, California.
She was a member of the Christian church, a devoted mother and true friend.
Besides her children, she leaves many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon in the locan Christian church, conducted by Rev. Burkhart, interment in the Gravity cemetery.

Note: Lydia's middle name was Nadomia.

Lydia was not born near Quebec, she was born in Ontario, Canada.

Thomas Cole was born in Gravity, Taylor county, Iowa, on Oct. 9, 1875, where he spent his early life and engaged in farming. He was married there in 1899. The family came to Montana in 1912 and took up a homestead and resided there until 1939, when they left for San Diego, California. His wife preceded him in death. About eight years ago he went to Seattle. He was united in marriage there and in 1949 and his wife survives. Surviving are two daughters, Myrl Watson and Evelyn Kaldor; three brothers and three sisters, and other relatives. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery.

Note: This obituary is pretty confusing about marriages. Thomas did marry in 1899 in Iowa and he and Hattie did come to Montana. Hattie died in 1920 so when the obituary says "they" left for San Diego in 1939 it is unclear who "they" are. Thomas is enumerated in the 1940 census living with his daughter Merl, his marital status is married but no wife is listed.
The obituary continues saying he went to Seattle and was married there and in 1949.

As near as I can figure, it appears he was married four times. The only other marriage I find besides Hattie is to a Cora Wilson Halfacre in Montana in 1936.

John's second wife Katie Ryker Cole marries for a second time in Iowa. In 1923, at the age of 45 she marries a 69 year old man.

Thus it would appear that John and Daisy were divorced early in their marriage, Daisy never remarries but has a child in 1918. John remarries Katie, she had a child in 1917. John and Katie appear to divorce by 1923 when Katie marries a second time.
