Dear Peg,
As I promised some time ago to dig up my ancestors as far back as I can trace them, I will delve
around the roots of the family tree carefully, lest I shake off some windfall that might be rotten fruit.
Whoever the antediluvian pair that first started the ball rolling, I do not know but the O'Ryans came
from Tipperary, Ireland, and as the Mc and 0 s were supposed to be true Irishmen, they descended
from the old Celtic race.
In 1818 my grandfather, William Ryan, having spent or lost two fortunes in Ireland, and being an Irish
rebel believing in self-government, as I do, came to Quebec, P.Q., in a sailing vessel. I suppose he
walked from Quebec to St. Andrews, N.B., which is about five hundred miles. Of course in those days,
it was either oxen or foot it, staying over wherever night would overtake them.
The railroad must have started to be built up the St.Croix and as it was under the Stars and Stripes,
where he wanted to be, he went up the river and bought up land, started a farm. He could not have
stayed there long, when he went back to Ireland and brought his wife and father back with him. He
must have had a restless roving nature, perhaps prospecting for a better lay, for a few years after, he
was returning home from a trip and was told of an old man being sick, and the Indians going to St.
Andrews which would be about twenty-five miles, to get the priest. He hurried home, and a few days
later the Indians took the remains of his father down the path or road and were towed across the river
to St. Andrews which was the only Catholic consecrated ground for miles and miles. That was about
1822. I am sending you a snap of the cemetery. I had hard work to find it. The wooden cross shown
here and there through tall branches, a tumbled down fence overgrown with bushes and brier and old
headstones fallen down. That man would be my Great Grandfather and Will's Great Great Grand
father. My brother Will who died in 1893 was named for Grandfather Ryan and Will, in turn, was
named for both. There are some verses by Grandfather Ryan saying he couldn't stand being poor, so
he left the tyrant nation. I remember him with very white hair, buckles in his shoes, and a tall hat with a
big handkerchief. He used to turn the beaver upside down, mop his brow and put the kerchief in it; and
woe betide the kid who molested it. He had a goodly temper and a dominant spirit, but I can see now that
it was hard for him to come to a new section and blaze the trail.
Grandmother's name was Ryan, and they say they were both educated. I have a book of Latin that
belonged to them. Ted's grandfather and my grandmother were brother and sister. Grandmother died
at middle age. Grandfather lived to be ninety-eight.
Their sons were born on the farm; my father Matthew Ryan was one. He was a hustler and too bright a
man to have to live in that country. He married my mother when they were both nineteen. He bought a
farm (where my brother John lives) but farming was too slow for him so he lumbered for years, first in
Maine, then later on a bigger scale in Nova Scotia during the winter, being home in the summer. He
always hired help for the farm.
Mother's name was Malloy. She was born in Canada and had one brother. Her mother's name was
MacAleer of Scotch and Irish parentage. They were farmers, as there was little else to do in those days.
Mother said her people came from Wexford County, Ireland, as I remember, but whether they were
married in Ireland or Canada, I do not know. Grandmother Malloy was not young when she married
and had just the two children, Mother and Uncle Mike. I remember Mother crying - so lonesome after
her mother. They lived near each other in Baileyville, Maine. Grandmother Malloy died in 1862 and
Mother in 1898.
How strange is this life. It is hardly worthwhile for one to weep after the other.
And so my dear Peg, I have shaken the limbs of the family tree. There may have been some hot
tempers and restless natures, but no real bad fruit or I would know it. I think had there been more
business in that country to feed their ambition on, they would have been more contented. I love to
wander back to the old scenes. I think it was Whittier who said -
"The hills dearest to our childish feet
have climbed the earliest,
The streams most sweet are ever those from
Which our young lips first drank."

He renounces forever his allegiance to King George V and states he is not an anarchist or polygamist and intends to become a citizen of the United States.
Note: The following month William completes a WWI draft registration and states he was born in Calais, ME.

Military Note:
On June 4, 1917, William completed a WWI Registration card, on it he states he lives at 27 Vernon Street in Waltham, Mass, he is 23 years of age, born May 15, 1894. He is natural born in Calais, Maine. He occupation is as an auto machinist for the Mac Gregor Garage in Waltham, Mass., is single and caucasian. The registrar reports he is of medium height and medium build with brown eyes and brown hair, he is not bald. There is a handwritten note above the signature of William that states, "I have passed Naval Reserve examination."
Note: Two brothers of William register the following day, they give the same home address as William although they each say they are aliens (not citizens), born in Milltown, New Brunswick, Canada and therefore citizens of Great Britain. Family lore says that William was also born in Milltown but lied in order to join the service. Milltown and Calais, Maine are directly opposite each other on the US/Canada border. William did serve in the Army Air Force during World War I. Also, Williams eyes were blue, not brown.

McGOLDRICK, Richard Deane Of Denmark, Maine was born in Boston May 12, 1928 to Bernard Francis and Gertrude (Deane) McGoldrick and passed away peacefully at home on October 3, 2010 after a long battle with esophageal cancer. He lived in Quincy, MA and Centerville, MA, attended Thayerlands Academy and Cranwell Prep in MA and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Business Administration degree in 1950. He was in the Navy program at UND and was discharged from the Navy in 1954 as a LTJG. He worked in the food business during most of his career, as well as being active in community theatre, a member of SAG and AFTRA, was seen in major movies and made-for-TV movies, performed in many industrial films, as well as doing a lot of modelling while he was living in the Boston area. He was married to Marcia O'Keeffe in 1951. They had four children: Bernard Francis, Mary Marcia, Richard Deane Jr. and Michael Arthur and resided in Wellesley, MA. In 1977 Dick was one in a cadre of men who opened a half-way house known as Answer House, supported their fundraising efforts and realized the eventual addition of Sullivan House, both in South Boston. Dick was an avid golfer, played in many tournaments and in 1973 was president of Woodlands Country Club in Newton, MA. Dick moved to Maine in 1984 where he operated Old Port Yacht Sales in Portland. Here he met his loving wife, Marilyn. Together they enjoyed sailing the Maine coast as well as "going south" and cruising the Caribbean. They also journeyed on many extended motor home trip adventures around the country. Dick moved to Denmark, Maine in 1985, sold his food brokerage company and started new careers, which included becoming an EMT II, a constable, an Animal Control Officer (in 10 towns), a Substance Abuse Councillor, a Domestic Violence facilitator, a Bail Commissioner, President of Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, and was again active in community theatre. He was very proud of having served his country throughout his adult life, was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the U.S. Secretary of Defense for his service, and was recently honored by the Maine Base Submarine Veterans. In 2001 he received the Family Crisis Services Criminal Justice Award. Dick was a member of the Harrison American Legion Post, one time member of the Bridgton Lions, and a member of the Maine Base Sub-Vets. Dick was predeceased by his Mother (1937), his father (1949), his sister Barbara McGoldrick Fulham (1993) and his stepson Brian Forbes (1999). He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Denmark, his children Bernie, wife Marge and granddaughter Kelly of Chester, NY; Mary and daughter Devin Arey of Brookline, MA; Deane of Wellesley, MA; Michael, wife Wendy and daughter Amanda of Natick, MA. Also stepdaughters Alyson (Mrs Barry) Smith and daughter Abby of Harrison, Maine; Deanna (Mrs. David) Kelly of Fryeburg, Maine as well as many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be on Friday evening, October 8 from 6-8 PM at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton, Maine. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Bridgton on Saturday, October 9th at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Joseph Daniels officiating. Interment in the Gilman Cemetery in Denmark will follow the Mass. Dick was a champion for numerous causes. Obituary for Daniel John McGoldrick:
McGoldrick, Daniel John, 69, of Vineyard Haven and Hingham , Monday, December 8, 2003, of a sudden heart attack. A graduate of University of Notre Dame, a member of the Counter Intelligence Corp in the U.S. Army, he was a man of many talents and inventions. Most of all he was a devoted brother, Uncle, Grand Uncle and friend to a wide circle of family and friends. He leaves his sisters, Jean Reuter of Pennington, N.J., Ann DeGon of Spokane,WA and Arline Harkness of Vineyard Haven. He was a special Uncle to Lisa Harkness of Hingham, her children, Jack and Liam Hobbs, as well as to his many nieces and nephews, their children and friends. He was pre-deceased by his brother Jim of El Segundo, California and his parents John and Alice McGoldrick of Hingham. His funeral Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart, Star of the Sea Church, Oak Bluffs, on Saturday, December 13, at 1:30 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Vineyard Haven Library, 200 Main St., Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
