On September 12, 1917, James registered for the draft in Holyoke, MA. He gives his birthdate as August 25, 1899. He states he is a non-declarant alien, a Canadian British citizen. He lists his occupation as yard foremen, the employers name is illegible. He lists his mother, Mary McGoldrick of Holyoke as his nearest relative.
The registrar notes he is of medium height and build with blue eyes and light hair.
