Seeking info on fate of DICKERSON siblings who were orphaned in Bloomington, Muscatine in 1840. Nine boys and one girl ranging from 11 to 24 in age. Specifically seeking what became of Xenophon the youngest who was born in 1828 in Ohio and brother Whitten. I am a direct descendant of brother Jesse who lived in Muscatine and Louisa counties until his death in 1871. Family arrived at Bloomington in 1836 with mother Sally Dailey who passed in 1839-40. All children born in Washington County, Ohio. They lived in Indiana prior to arrival in Iowa. Sister, Nancy walked the Oregon Trail in 1844-5. Brothers Luther, Frederick, Vachel and Thomas went south to Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma & Texas. Brother Silas believed to have gone to Illinois and later Texas. // Bill Dickerson // alpca2913@aol.com //

Noted in the Muscatine list one James Welch. I believe he is the husband of my great aunt Nancy Dickerson. They were married in Muscatine in 1840. The Dickersons settled in Muscatine (then Bloomington) in 1836 and spread out from there. My great grandfather Jesse moved on to Louisa County. James and Nancy went to Missouri in 1844 and walked the Trail to Oregon. I would be grateful for any reference to James Welch or anyone with the surname Dickerson. Nancy had nine brothers. Her mother Sally died in 1839 and she cared for them as mother until moving on to Oregon. The father Joseph Dickerson had died enroute to Iowa. All were native to Ohio. James Welch was native to Kentucky. Thank you. Bill Dickerson, Milford, NH

    Died:
Two death dates have been reported for John W. Dailey, 1856 and 1873. I tend to think that the 1873 is correct as his wife Mary who died in 1865 is buried in Rio. Had John died in 1856 he probably would have been buried either there or in Ohio. As he is supposedly buried in Iowa I think the later date is more correct. See letters from Austin Dailey to Mabel Crawford.

I suspect that the indexer made an error as I find it hard to believe that most folks living in Switzerland Co., Indiana were born in Iowa.

    Obituary:
    Nancy Rebecca Phillips,
Nancy Rebecca Daily (sic), daughter of John Wesley (sic) and Mary Dailey, was born in Marrow (sic) county, Ohio, October 21, 1838, and died at the home of her son Howard Phillips in Worth, Mo. July 9, 1926, aged 87 years, 8 months, and 18 days. She was the youngest of ten children, two brothers and seven sisters, all of whom preceded her to the great beyond. In 1855 she moved, with her parents, to Knox Co. Ill, where she was united in marriage to Francis Marion Crawford in 1862. To this union four childrenn were born, as follows: Harley, of Ontario, Cal.; Elmer , of Gravity, Ia.; Willard. of Elk City, Okla; and Mrs. Geneva Burrell, of Bedford, Ia.
After the death of her companion at Galesburg, Ill in 1873, she moved with her little family to Missouri, where on April 28, 1877, she was married to Isaac Phillips. To this union two sons and two daughters were born: Edward Arthur who preceded her in death in March, 1914, Howard Isaac and Mrs. Della E. Long, both of Worth, and Mrs. Cora Agnes Giesken, of Parnell, Mo.
Besides those mentioned above, she leaves to mourn her passing twenty grandchildren, ten great, grandchildren and seven step children, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Grandmother Phillips, as she was lovingly called by her many relatives and friends, was converted at the age of fifteen years and united with the Methodist church and remained in that faith until the end.
Grandma always had a smile and a pleasant word for everyone and was truly a model of Christian fortitude and patience in her many trials and afflitions. For the past several years she had made her home with her son Howard, and wife in Worth, and for some time has been quite helpless. On July 2nd she was stricken with paralysis. All that kind and loving hands could do was in vain, and one week later she passed to her reward.
O! Dear mother, how we miss you
    Now that you have gone away;
But in heaven we hope to meet you,
    On a fairer, brighter day.
Funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church in Worth at two o'clock Saturday, July 10 by the pastor, A. R. Lamb. The quartette composed of Mrs. Bertha Canaday, Mrs Wilmer Wallace, Luther Pierce and George Wray, sang "There is no Disappointment in Heaven," "Lead Kindly Light," and "Abide With Me."
Pall; bearers were Joseph Hughes, Matt Schuster, Amos Faw, Frank Moore, Chas. Harris and Wm. Lattimer. Interment was in the Barnes cemetery west of town.

    Note:
Irma sent me the following, she said it was her response to Nancy Speck (61.1.1.1) regarding family history.
"My father didn't like to talk about his life with his people, though he told many stories of his life alone after he left home as a bachelor in Montana and Wyoming. He was a guide in the Yellowstone Park, or rather he drove a stage there. He carried mail in Wyoming and said often the Indians would watch him and travel along with him at a short distance, but they never bothered him. He rode horseback and just made the trip once a month. One winter he was snowed in a cabin alone for two months and that was when he read the Bible, really studied it and decided it was full of lies and contradictions so he never cared to go to church. He said his father (Francis Marion Crawford) might be called an interior decorator, he had some kind of store for a time where he sold furniture. Willard said once that I might have gotten some of my artistic desire from his father. Grandma Crawford (Nancy Rebecca Dailey), as I always called her seemed to be a woman of character, I stayed with her for a week or so while I was 10 years old. I recall how neat she kept her little house. She had a cistern outside and got all her water from that. She told me she never drank straight water, she always kept a coffee pot on the back of the stove and had coffee instead of water all day when she got thirsty. She lived near her daughter, (the mother of Wadena Phillips (#61.1.1) , the mother of Nancy Rebecca Speck.) and helped her look after her children, as she was a widow. ((note: The mother of Martha Wadena Phillips was NOT Nancy Rebecca's daughter but rather her daughter-in-law, Mayetta Bell Long, widow of Nancy Rebecca's son Edward Arthur Phillips, #61.1)).
My father had many hurts in connection with his mother, it seemed that no one approved of her marrying her cousin, Edward Arthur Phillips**, their mothers were sisters. Sally and Mary Deweese. Also, he must have been an alcoholic, as he used to excuse Arthur, who committed suicide and was drunk, I remember, at my father's funeral, by saying he took after his father. Oh yes, now I remember it was Arthur's wife that lived by Grandma, it was Howard that was drunk at Willard's funeral. His two sisters were Cora and Della, Della was Mildred's mother. He loved them, but disliked his half brothers and mother seemed to think they were the reason he left home to go west, but I don't know exactly what age he was when he left. When mother met him he was 14 years older than she was. He could even have been married in those years, but if he was it was a secret.
He had a terrible hurt against his brother, Harley, because for 20 years he never contacted his mother, never sent her any money, though he had moved to California and had a nice home near Whittier. When I was about 10 he decided to forgive Harley and go visit him. He and his wife belonged to a radical religous sect, the Weslian Methodists, or something, and he had even less respect for him after he knew that, as he had been so unkind to his mother.
Willard was very close to his brother Elmer, he talked of him more than anyone, understood and loved him with a deep affection. He loved his sister, Neva, and sent her money when Mother needed it to buy groceries, so Mother had a deep resentment of her. That resentment grew when we visited her in their 4-bedroom home in Bedfort (sic), Iowa, and found how well off they were, yet had never returned any of the money. When we were very poor in the Ozarks my father wrote of our poverty and they sent no money, but a huge box of fancy (that was what mother called them) clothes. For a while I was the best dressed little girl in our community, I had a hat with a big plume and high buttoned, thin shoes which didn't fit."

** Nancy Rebecca did marry her first cousin, but his name was Isaac Phillips, Edward Arthur Phillips was their son.
