Note: John Johnson Estrem was born November 15, 1836 (Norway birth register) (death certificate has November 28, 1836) in Vang, Valdres, Oppland County, Norway. He was the illegimate child of Ingeborg Evensdatr Hæn and John Johnson Nefstad. His name appears in several ways according to various documents: Norway marriage record: John Johnson Østerim, age 21, married Sigrid Nilsdatr. Veblensejet, age 24, on November 22, 1857. John Johnsen Næbstad, age 22, checked out of the church on March 30, 1858. Also his wife, Sigri Nilsdtr, his mother, Ingeborg Evensdtr Heen and possibly a brother-in-law. The Vang bygdebok gives Sigrid's husband's name as "Jon Jonsson Austreim (Heen)." Sigrid's name is recorded with different farm names: Volviseiga/Veflen/Leite/Berge. She was born December 29, 1833 and died June 29, 1902. John and Sigrid had 10 children - I believe a few died young, and some used "Johnson" as a surname. Immigratn: A year after their marriage John and Sigrid immigrated, settling first in Wisconsin and then to Warsaw Township, Minnesota. Census: 1900 census at Warsaw Township, Goodhue, MN shows: John Estrem, 63, married 43 years, b. Nov 1836, age 43, b. NORWAY, immigrated 1858, in country 42 years, able to read & write, does not speak English, farm owner; Sigrid, b. Dec 1833, age 66, 10 children born / 7 living, b. NORWAY, immigrated 1858, in country 42 years, able to read, unable to write or speak English; children b. MN: John, b. Aug 1866, age 33, farmer, rents farm; Gilbert, b. Jun 1872, age 27, carpenter; Nels A., b. Nov 1878, age 21, carpenter. Obituary: From the Kenyon Leader, January 6, 1916 John Estrum John Estrum, aged 80 years, died at his home in Warsaw on Friday, December, 30. Deceased was born in Valders, Norway, in 1836. In 1857 he was united in marriage to Sigrid Leite. A year later the couple came to America, settling in Wisconsin. After remaining there for a time they removed to Warsaw, where they have since made their home. Ten children blessed the union, six of whom survive and are as follows: Mrs. Eberhart of Thief River Falls; Mrs. McCurdy of Minneapolis, Nels, Gilbert, and Evan, and Mrs. George Kolstad all of the town of Warsaw.
