  	Most Michauds in North America are descended from a single individual, Pierre Micheau (or Michel) dit Michaud, an immigrant from the Poitou -- now called Vendée -- region of western France. The name Michaud itself actually means 'little Michael', and as such, has been adopted by other French "Michael" families around the world at various times. Pierre came to New France/Canada in 1656 as an indentured worker to Jacques Pepin, a ship's factor and merchant. He traveled aboard the ship La Fortune, out of La Rochelle, France. He worked off his 3-year contract to Pepin as a laborer, then became a land owner and farmer on several sites along the St. Lawrence river in Quebec. His final bequest to his family was a plot of land facing the St. Lawrence in Kamouraska, Quebec. A granite monument was erected there in June 1990 by his ancestors, members of The Michaud Association, in his memory.
