Census: Daniel and Mary are living in Rush River, WI where Daniel is a farmer. The birthplaces of their children show their migration from east to midwest. Their first child is born in Pennsylvania, the next in New York, the next two in Ohio and finally the youngest (John Laughlin) in Wisconsin. The 1860 census does not list relationships or the birthplace of parents so we don't know who John "belongs" to but Daniel and Nancy are clearly not his parents.

Census: In 1900 Edward and Mary Phalen have been married 12 years and have 3 children. Edward works for the railroad. He lists his parents as having been born in Ireland, he was born in Canada but states he came to the US in 1880. Census: In 1910 Mary is living in Ladysmith, WI with her 3 children, she gives her marital status as widowed. Divorced women very often gave their status as widowed rather than divorced. Mary's sons, aged 18 and 19 are working in the paper mill. For additional income Mary has taken in as boarders a widowed man and his 6 year old son. Census: The 1920 census shows Charles and Mary living in Minneapolis along with Mary's daughter. Elizabeth is working as an office helper. Census: The 1930 census shows Charles and Mary living in a household with her daughter, as in 1920 but Elizabeth is now married with 3 children. Charles works at a state university as a truck helper.
