Other Events and Attributes:
Notes:
Note: John succeeded his father as a selectman in 1689. He was a selectman in 1692-94 and 1699 and also held some minor civil appointments in the town. He was occupied, however, mainly with church affairs, having become a Deacon, probably, upon the death of his father. Thenceforth the records show him to have been constantly on committees having charge of the religious and educational interests of the community, now "obtaining a ministr," then "hyering a schoolmaster." In 1705 the church honored him by voting him a sitting "in ye seat before ye pulpit." He served as representative in the General Assembly in the sessions of 1722 and 1725. The date of his death cannot be ascertained, nor is that of his wife. The volume of probate records, which probably covered the time within which they died, unfortunately is missing. He conveyed property to his sons James and Joseph of Ridgefield, in 1722 and 1723; and that he was living in 1727 is thought to be certain because his son is referred to as Deacon John Benedict, Junior.

Note: In 1708 James and other inhabitants of Norwalk purchased a large tract of land between that town and Danbury. The purchase was made of Catoonah the chief sachem, and other Indians, whowere the proprietors of that part of the country. At a Norwalk town session, 1709, it was ordained that is should be a distinct township by the name of Ridgefield. James was also one of the original settlers of this township. Fence-viewer in 1715, called Ensign, 1719, afterwards Captain, and 1737, Esquire. He was appointed justice of the peace for Fairfield County, CT, May 1732 and was reappointed annually until 1733. He was representative from Ridgefield, from May 1740-45 and 1748-1752. He was the first to write the genealogy of the Benedict family. In his youth he lived with his grandmother, Mary Bridgum, wife of Thomas, and she delivered to him, from her own mouth, the genealogy down to his own memory, and he reduced it to writing. His "Genealogy of the Family of the Benedicts," dated March 14, 1755 has been the foundation of all the subsequent ones. His grandson, Abner Benedict, a member of the junior class in Yale College made an exact copy of it June 23, 1768. James was the second Deacon of the church in Ridgefield, till old age and its attendants rendered him unable to serve.

DNA: MKM Obituary: Thomas Cole was born in Gravity, Taylor county, Iowa, on Oct. 9, 1875, where he spent his early life and engaged in farming. He was married there in 1899. The family came to Montana in 1912 and took up a homestead and resided there until 1939, when they left for San Diego, California. His wife preceded him in death. About eight years ago he went to Seattle. He was united in marriage there and in 1949 and his wife survives. Surviving are two daughters, Myrl Watson and Evelyn Kaldor; three brothers and three sisters, and other relatives. Burial was made in Riverside cemetery. Note: This obituary is pretty confusing about marriages. Thomas did marry in 1899 in Iowa and he and Hattie did come to Montana. Hattie died in 1920 so when the obituary says "they" left for San Diego in 1939 it is unclear who "they" are. Thomas is enumerated in the 1940 census living with his daughter Merl, his marital status is married but no wife is listed. The obituary continues saying he went to Seattle and was married there and in 1949. As near as I can figure, it appears he was married four times. The only other marriage I find besides Hattie is to a Cora Wilson Halfacre in Montana in 1936. Census: 1900 census at Washington Township, Taylor, IA lists: || Thomas Cole, born Oct 1875, age 24, born Iowa, parents born OH/Canada, married 1 year; Hattie, born Oct 1879, age 20, born Iowa, parents born unknown/unknown, children born and living, 0. PA/IL; Myrtle, 3, b. IA; Infant daughter, 3/12, b. IA. Thomas M. is enumerated immediately after Elmer and Arvilla (Cole) Crawford. Census: 1920 census at Loma, Chouteau, MT shows Thomas M. Pale, 44, b. IA, parents b. OH/Canada, farmer; Hattie A., 40, b. IA, parents b. TN/OH; Myrtle, 12, b. IA; Caryl, 9, b. IA; Evlyn M., 2 5/12, b. MT. The census index at ancestry.com has indexed Thomas as "Thomas M. Pale" in School District 8, Chouteau, MT. The census page clearly shows School District 7. Note: The Bedford Times reports "T.C. Cole (sic) and daughters to spend winter in Gravity." Census: 1930 census at School District 15, that part in Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Cut Bank, Glacier, MT census shows: Thomas M. Note: John and Daisy were married in Bedford, Iowa in 1908, their daughter Phyllis was born in 1909. They are present together in the 1910 census. John is found in the 1920 census living in Montana with his second wife Katie Maud Ryker and their son Homer who was born in February of 1917. Daisy is found in the 1925 state census living with her sister Lois. With her are her daughter's Phyllis and June. June was born in June of 1918. In this census and all subsequent census she gives her marital status as widow. John's second wife Katie Ryker Cole marries for a second time in Iowa. In 1923, at the age of 45 she marries a 69 year old man. Thus it would appear that John and Daisy were divorced early in their marriage, Daisy never remarries but has a child in 1918. John remarries Katie, she had a child in 1917. John and Katie appear to divorce by 1923 when Katie marries a second time. DNA: MKM Census: 1910 census at Grant Township, Taylor, IA shows: John C.
